Evoked potentials are caused potentials, by means of which the external stimulus is perceived and the response of the brain centers to these stimuli.

Depending on the stimulus which caused them, there are several types of evoked potentials, and usually the following are used in our practice: Visual evoked potentials – VEP; Auditory evoked potentials and potentials of the brain stem – BAEP: Somatosensory evoked potentials - SEP

The difficulties that can be “clarified” are vision obstructions (impaired and lost vision), hearing obstructions (impaired and lost hearing, “humming”) and sensitive systems (numbness, “pins and needles”, “burning”, “tingling”, etc.).

The examination is painless, there are no absolute contraindications for its preparation. The preparation includes clean hair, without gel. The person should not be hungry and not to take sedatives on the day of imaging.

  • BAEP – is an objective audiometric diagnostics of the peripheral and the central damages to the auditory pathways.
  • Indications: – they are used in the determination of the lesion level

- dizziness and balance disorders;

- strokes of the brainstem;

- carotid disease

- demyelinating diseases;

- degenerative diseases;

- neuroma of n. akustikus and tumors of the cerebellopontine angle

- differentiation of comatose state and brain death.

BAEP – it is a painless method, very accurate in the differentiation of the damages of the hearing pathway. It can be used multiple times and the prognosis of the disease can be monitored.

Somatosensory evoked potentials – SEP

Somatosensory evoked potentials – SEP

SEP -  it is a sophisticated neurophysiological method which is used for early detection and localization of hidden or manifested sensory damages of the sensory system, from the periphery to the central nervous system. It is a test for the real localization of the damages of the sensory pathways. Surface disc electrodes are used, which are sealed along the nerve trunks of the legs or the arms and the back, and summarized potential is registered from the scalp above the somatosensory region. It is a completely safe and painless method, and it can be repeated many times.


  • early detection of multiple sclerosis in 80% there is a positive finding;

Visual evoked potentials - VEP

VEP - it is a neurophysiological method whereby a light stimulus is used in order to examine the transmission from the retina to the visual cortex.


- lesions of the optic nerve; the visual pathways;

- lesions at the level of chiasm; the visual cortex, cortical blindness

- differentiation of the vascular demyelinating lesions proven on a NMR,

- multiple sclerosis - 90% is a positive finding in clinical and subclinical lesions, they are used for diagnostic criteria;

- diabetic retinopathy, retrobulbar neuritis, etc.

Electromyography – EMG


EMG is an examination of the function of the muscles, the peripheral nerves and the nerve roots and plexus.


- polyneuropathies (compressive, traumatic, inflammatory, metabolic);

- radiculopathies;

- myopathies, muscular dystrophies;

- polymyositis;

- diseases of the neuromuscular junction (myasthenia gravis)

Neurography - it is a method for measurement of the speed of conductivity through the peripheral nerves, by means of which a diagnosis is set whether the nerves are damaged and to what extent
