HISTORY

The Zhan Mitrev Clinical Hospital, originally called Special Hospital for Surgical Diseases “Philip II”, laid the foundations of modern medical services in 1999, after having adapted and renovated one leased part of the Military Hospital in Skopje.

The hospital officially opened on 1st March 2000, and the medical start was marked by the first bypass surgery in the Republic of Macedonia, led by academician Dr. Zhan Mitrev. On that 1st March 2000 we started making history in the Macedonian healthcare, the new era of Macedonian cardiovascular surgery.

Two years later, in 2002, we performed the first open heart surgery on an awake patient.

The interest for this institution started to grow day after day, and hence the need for new working conditions. The needs and the requirements to accommodate the patients initiated another renovation and the old department, in 2002, was replaced by a new and modern department. The treatment of congenital heart diseases started the following year. The first ACH occluder was placed on an atrial defect in a 4-year-old boy. The new, sophisticated diagnostic center became operational in 2008 and, since then it has become one of the leading centers in the region, working 24/7.

The tenth anniversary of the foundation of the hospital in 2010 was marked by 10,000 surgeries. Today, Zhan Mitrev Clinical Hospital is known, not only domestically, but also in the region, as a sophisticated, modern medical center offering comprehensive diagnostic procedures in most medical branches, supported by services in modern surgery, anesthesia, and intensive care.

The success story does not end here, but rather the opposite. The scientific achievements throughout the years brought relevant titles and awards. In 2002, Dr. Mitrev was promoted to an Academician of the Plato Academy. The activities of Dr. Zhan Mitrev’s team were promoted and presented on many world congresses, and the team received numerous awards and recognitions. As one of the many awards received in the country and abroad we would like to emphasize the prestigious EUROPE BUSINESS ASSEMBLY award and the Socrates Committee award, as well as the “Best Healthcare Manager and the Best Hospital” awards in the area of healthcare area.

The successful story gets a new dimension with the celebration of the 16th anniversary when the new, five times bigger building was opened under the name Zhan Mitrev Clinical Hospital. It was constructed in accordance with the highest standards, with a unique interior, top notch medical equipment, completely regulated environment, strictly managed heating and cooling regimens and supply of fresh air and maximum comfort for the patients, staff, and visitors. The successful operation was rewarded with the prestigious best manager and top healthcare services hospital awards, awarded to academician Dr. Zhan Mitrev, among health centers from Europe and Middle East.

The Zhan Mitrev Clinical Hospital received the golden seal of approval in October 2017 from Joint Commission International and became the first hospital that, after just under a year, entered the family of the most prestigious accreditation organization for hospitals in the world. The high performance standards of the hospital were confirmed again by the JCI reaccreditation in October 2020.

In April 2028, the Zhan Mitrev Clinical Hospital received the state quality accreditation from the Agency for Quality and Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions.
