The Department of Oncology provides diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of malignant diseases, with an individualized approach for every patient.

The department uses modern diagnostic methods, systemic therapy, and genetic counseling in order to achieve precise diagnosis and optimal treatment.

Diseases and Conditions

The department diagnoses and treats:

  • Malignant diseases of various organs and systems
    solid tumors in different locations
  • Advanced forms of malignant disease
    conditions that require systemic treatment
  • Recurrence of malignant disease
    return of the disease after previous treatment
  • Metastatic disease
    spread of the disease to other organs

Diagnostics

The department uses modern oncological diagnostics in order to establish a precise diagnosis, determine the type and stage of the disease, and select the most appropriate treatment.

A minimally invasive procedure in which a sample is taken from a tumor or suspicious lesion using a thin needle, usually under ultrasound or CT guidance. It is used for assessment of tumors of the breast, lymph nodes, thyroid gland, lungs, and other organs.

Collection of a larger tissue sample using a special needle, allowing more detailed pathological analysis and more precise determination of the tumor type, aggressiveness, and treatment sensitivity.

Ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used for detection, localization, and assessment of tumor spread. These methods are also used to monitor the effect of treatment and identify possible new changes.

Processing and analysis of collected samples in cooperation with reference laboratories, in order to precisely determine the type of malignant disease and its characteristics.

Additional tests that detect specific tumor markers and receptors, important for selection of targeted or hormonal therapy.

Testing for genetic changes and mutations associated with specific types of cancer in order to select targeted therapy and provide personalized treatment.

Treatments

The department uses different forms of systemic and local oncological treatment, always individually adapted according to the type, stage, and biological characteristics of the disease.

Systemic treatment with cytotoxic drugs, adapted according to the type and stage of the malignant disease. Treatment is planned individually and may be administered as a standalone therapy, before surgery, after surgery, or in combination with other oncological methods.

The most common form of administration, in which medications are given through intravenous access. It is used in different types of solid tumors and hematological diseases.

Administration of therapy directly into the cerebrospinal fluid in patients with involvement or risk of involvement of the central nervous system. The department uses medications such as methotrexate and trastuzumab according to clinical indication.

Localized administration of therapy into the pleural cavity in patients with malignant pleural effusions or tumor changes of the pleura. Cisplatin and taxanes are most commonly used.

Administration of cytotoxic drugs directly into the abdominal cavity in patients with selected tumors and peritoneal metastases. Depending on the indication, oxaliplatin, cisplatin, and taxanes may be used.

Local treatment for bladder tumors, in which the medication is administered directly into the bladder. Gemcitabine is most commonly used.

Treatment aimed at reducing the side effects of chemotherapy, including therapy against nausea, pain, infections, anemia, and immune-related disturbances.

Treatment selection is based on the patient’s clinical condition, histopathological findings, genetic analyses, and individual characteristics, with the aim of achieving the best possible outcome and minimizing side effects.

The department is equipped with modern technology for safe preparation and administration of oncological treatment:

  • Biosafety cabinet (Level II)
    specialized equipment for safe preparation and dilution of chemotherapy, ensuring protection for both the patient and the medical staff.
  • Infusion and syringe pumps
    precise and controlled administration of oncological medications and supportive therapy.
  • Diagnostic support (ultrasound, CT, MRI)
    modern imaging methods used to monitor tumor size and spread, as well as assess the response to therapy.
  • Laboratory and genetic support
    continuous monitoring of blood count, biochemical parameters, and the genetic characteristics of the tumor, as a basis for treatment selection and adjustment.
  • Equipment for local therapies
    systems and instruments for intrathecal, intrapleural, intraperitoneal, and intravesical administration of medications.
