The Department of Thoracic Surgery provides diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases affecting the organs within the chest, including the lungs, mediastinum, trachea, diaphragm, thyroid gland, and breast.
The department treats both benign and malignant conditions, as well as injuries and deformities, through an individualized approach and close collaboration with other specialties.
Surgical treatment is performed using both conventional and minimally invasive methods, depending on the patient’s condition.
Diseases and Conditions
The department diagnoses and treats:
Congenital deformities and injuries of the chest wall
Diseases of the lungs – infections, tumors, and other conditions
Diseases of the mediastinum – benign and malignant changes
Injuries and diseases of the diaphragm and trachea
Thyroid gland diseases – nodules, adenomas, and carcinomas
Breast diseases – mastitis, fibroadenomas, and breast cancer
Diagnostics
The department uses modern diagnostic methods for precise assessment of diseases of the lungs, mediastinum, thyroid gland, and breast, as well as for planning surgical treatment.
Comprehensive assessment of lung capacity and function, especially in patients with chronic lung disease, shortness of breath, or before planned surgery.
Measurement of airflow and lung volumes in order to detect obstructive and restrictive disorders. It is used in patients with chronic cough, COPD, asthma, and for preoperative assessment.
Assessment of total lung capacity and pulmonary reserve, which is particularly important before surgical removal of part of the lung.
Assessment of the lungs’ ability to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide, as well as the level of oxygenation in the blood.
A basic radiological method used to detect tumors, inflammation, fluid, lung collapse, or other structural changes.
Detailed analysis of the lungs, pleura, mediastinum, and surrounding structures. It enables detection and assessment of tumors, metastases, lymph nodes, blood vessels, and planning of the surgical approach.
An additional method for assessment of soft tissues, the mediastinum, thyroid gland, and breast, especially when a more detailed evaluation of the extent of disease is required.
Direct examination of the airways with the possibility of biopsy, bronchoalveolar lavage, and detection of tumors, narrowing, inflammation, or bleeding.
A surgical procedure used to assess the mediastinum and lymph nodes, particularly in patients with lung cancer or suspected mediastinal changes.
Tissue sampling from the lung, lymph nodes, thyroid gland, or breast under ultrasound or CT guidance, in order to establish an accurate diagnosis.

Treatments
The department performs modern surgical procedures on the organs of the chest, selecting either a minimally invasive or conventional approach according to the patient’s condition.
Operative treatment of diseases of the lungs, pleura, mediastinum, thyroid gland, and breast, depending on the type, location, and stage of the disease.
Depending on the size and location of the change, the following procedures may be performed:

- Wedge resection – removal of a small part of the lung tissue
- Segmentectomy – removal of one segment of the lung
- Lobectomy – removal of an entire lobe
- Pneumonectomy – removal of the entire lung
These operations can be performed in 2 ways:
- Minimally invasive surgery (VATS) – Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery, in which the procedure is performed through small incisions using a camera and specialized instruments. This approach allows less pain, shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery.
- Conventional surgery (thoracotomy) – a surgical approach using a larger incision, applied when broader access to the chest organs is required, especially in complex or extensive diseases.
Removal of tumors, cysts, or enlarged lymph nodes in the mediastinum.
Partial or complete removal of the thyroid gland in patients with nodules, tumors, goiter, or other thyroid diseases.
Removal of a tumor, segmental resection, or more extensive surgical treatment, depending on the size and type of the lesion.
Careful monitoring after surgery, including pain control, respiratory support, physiotherapy, and follow-up of healing.
