Department Overview

The Department of Transfusion Medicine ensures the safe and timely availability of blood components for patients, in collaboration with the Institute of Transfusion Medicine.

In addition, the department conducts the process of hemovigilance, which includes all activities from donor to recipient, with the aim of improving safety and efficiency during transfusion.

Diseases and Conditions

The department participates in the diagnosis and follow-up of conditions related to:

  • Anemia and the need for transfusion
    provision of appropriate blood components
  • Coagulopathies
    disorders of blood clotting
  • Thrombosis and thromboembolic conditions
    monitoring and risk assessment
  • Hematological and systemic diseases
    laboratory support in diagnosis
  • Postoperative and acute conditions
    monitoring of coagulation and blood count

Diagnostics

The department performs laboratory and diagnostic examinations for assessment of blood groups, coagulation, and the risk of thrombosis or transfusion reactions.

  • Blood group and Rh factor determination – performed in adults and newborns as the basis for safe transfusion.
  • Indirect Coombs Test (IAT) – detection of antibodies in the serum that may cause transfusion reactions or complications during pregnancy.
  • Direct Coombs Test (DAT) – detection of antibodies attached to red blood cells in cases of suspected hemolysis or autoimmune conditions.
  • Compatibility testing – verification of compatibility between the patient’s blood and blood components before transfusion in order to ensure maximum safety.
  • Prothrombin Time (PT) – assessment of the extrinsic coagulation pathway.
  • Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) – assessment of the intrinsic coagulation pathway.
  • Thrombin Time – evaluation of the final stage of coagulation.
  • Fibrinogen – measurement of the key protein required for blood clot formation.
  • D-Dimer – assessment of active thrombosis or thromboembolic processes.
  • INR – monitoring and adjustment of oral anticoagulant therapy.
  • Anti-Xa – control of therapy with low-molecular-weight and unfractionated heparins.
  • Platelet Function Testing – assessment of the ability of platelets to participate in coagulation.
  • Antiplatelet Drug Effect Testing – monitoring of therapy in patients receiving aspirin, clopidogrel, and similar medications.
  • Doppler ultrasound of the venous system – non-invasive assessment of venous circulation, the presence of thrombosis, and the risk of thromboembolic complications.
